Hum the Song
The guesser holds the phone against their forehead, screen facing the room. Everyone else can see the song and hums it, with no words. The guesser has to name the title or the artist, then tilts the phone down to score and up to skip.
A music quiz that plays no music: the room is the soundtrack. Which means it works on a train as well as in a living room, with no licensing and no connection.
How to play, step by step
- One player holds the phone flat against their forehead, screen facing the group. They are the one guessing.
- The song appears, title and artist, visible to everyone except the player holding the phone.
- The group hums the tune with their mouths closed: no lyrics, no "la la la" mapped onto the chorus syllables.
- The guesser calls out what they think they recognise. The title or the artist is enough.
- Correct: they tilt the phone down and the next song appears. Stuck: they tilt up to skip.
- When the timer runs out, the recap lists the songs found and skipped, then the phone moves on.
- Cards are picked by decade and musical style, so set the range before you start.
Variants
- Single hummer. Instead of the whole group, one nominated player hums. Much harder, and much funnier when they are off-key.
- No chorus. Humming the chorus is banned, verse or bridge only. For the music nerds.
Playing tips
- Pick the decade to suit the room. The 2000s almost always land; the 80s split the group by age.
- The most off-key humming is often the most recognisable. Chase the rhythm, not the pitch.
Frequently asked questions
The group hums, and the player with the phone on their forehead guesses. They never see the song: all they get is the melody.
None at all. That is the difference from a blind test: the players are the soundtrack, so it works anywhere and offline.
No, that is the other game in the catalogue: Sing the Song, where lyrics are allowed.
